Multicam—the official pattern for over 17 countries in the world must be so because there are numerous uses attached to it. Multicam has proven to be effective, efficient and practically perfect to be used in all conditions by many official forces be it the army, navy, air forces or the marines. Originally created as part of an experiment the Multicam uniforms were made to see if a single camouflaging pattern would prove enough to limit the visual characteristic of an individual. There are three main advantages of using the Multicam.

Firstly, it has the tendency to adopt the shades of the background. This implies that the pattern and thus the uniforms appear collectively green when surrounded by greenery and overall tanned when present in the desert. The Multicam Pattern has been made primarily using 7 colors which consist of greens, browns and blotches of other colors that have varying gradients of the original green and brown. It therefore has the ability to “blend” into the environment depending upon the color variation.

Secondly, the pattern has the ability to disguise shape, density and volume. This indicates that the pattern is specifically designed to fool human perception and alter visual responses. Biologically a very small part of the brain can perceive color, therefore the rest of the gaps are “colored in” by the brain itself. The Multicam takes this ability and uses it to its potential by enabling the individual to only see the pattern as if it was a constituent of the background and not as a separate entity.

Lastly the pattern sets and equilibrium in scale, sharpness and contrast. Therefore it is equally effective at close and distant ranges. Since blocky and pixeled patterns stand out among the background Multicam uses this as an advantage and becomes smooth, there is a balance within the sharpness and contrast so that even in close range it is undetectable. Its application is also as wide-spread as it advantages. The Multicam pattern has been used thoroughly in Fabrics i.e. clothing, cap etc, Webbing and Binding and Coating i.e. transferring the pattern to any hard surface and coating it permanently.
